Alanine General Information Alanine is a nonessential amino acid that is an important source of energy for the muscles, brain, and central nervous system. It is a critical component in building protein and it helps regulate the metabolism of sugars and organic acids. This amino acid also produces antibodies which boost the immune system. Alanine is found in meats, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy products. Alanine Uses & Scientific Evidence For Alanine is present in prostate fluid which has spurred scientific research for its effect on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In one study involving 45 men with BPH, the men were given 780 mg of Alanine per day for 2 weeks, then 390 mg for 2 and a half months along with a combination glycine and glutamic acid, and found the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia were reduced. Animal tests have shown this amino acid to reduce cholesterol in rats. Alanine Dosage Information Amino acid supplements prefaced by the letter L, such as L-Alanine, are more similar to the amino acids in the body than those that start with the letter D, with the exception of D-L phenylalanine, which treats chronic pain. Most people do not need to supplement their diet with Alanine; however, it is best to consult with your physician if you need an Alanine supplement for the treatment of your condition.
