Cardiac Arrhythmia

General Cardiac Arrhythmia Information
Any disturbance in the natural rhythm of the heart is called a cardiac arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat. People who experience an occasional “skipped heartbeat” should not be alarmed. This type of mild palpitation occurs when the heart beats earlier than it should and is followed by a one- or two-second pause before the next normally paced beat. The pause, followed by a strong beat can actually feel like the heart skipped a beat. Arrhythmia, on the other hand, occurs on a recurring basis and lasts for more than one beat at a time. The term arrhythmia refers to actual depressions and accelerations in the heart rate that are not related to the normal changes in heart rate that occur during daily periods of rest and activity. Arrhythmia can range in severity from merely annoying to immediately life threatening. There are two types of arrhythmia: tachycardia, when the heart beats too quickly, and bradycardia, when the heat beats too slowly. Most arrhythmias fall into the tachycardia category, with some originating in the ventricles and others in the atria. Ventricular tachycardia is the most serious of the two and is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death.

Possible Causes of Cardiac Arrhythmia
Any condition that affects the structure of heart and its electrical balance can cause cardiac arrhythmia. Coronary heart disease, congenital heart defects, heart muscle disease, heart valve disorders, hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure, dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system and some lung disorders can trigger arrhythmia. Arrhythmia is also caused by external factors, like electrical shock and severe chest injury. When certain chemicals or hormones, such as caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, cocaine, inhaled aerosol stimulants and adrenaline, rush into the bloodstream, arrhythmia can be the result.

Possible Symptoms of Cardiac Arrhythmia
Occasional, mild disturbances in heartbeat is common and should be no cause for alarm, but when changes in heartbeat are frequent and recurring, a more serious arrhythmia may be present. Persistent palpitations are common signs of tachycardia. These palpitations are often described as feeling like a “flip flopping heart”, a strong beating in the neck or a fluttering, pounding, beating, thumping in the chest. Tachycardia can also cause chest pain, weakness, sweating, shortness of breath, fainting and confusion. Symptoms of bradycardia include fatigue, shortness of breath, lightheadedness and fainting.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Cardiac Arrhythmia
Magnesium, calcium and potassium moderate heart activity, so eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, soybeans and fish. Include exercise in the daily routine. Regular exercise not only lowers the resting heart rate, but it also burns adrenaline, a hormone that causes an increase in heart rate. Nicotine is a stimulant that can cause heart rate to soar, so it is very beneficial to quit smoking. Caffeine causes an increase in heart rate, even after just one cup of coffee or soda pop, so drink decaffeinated beverages and avoid other sources of caffeine.
