Native American Indians ate the inner bark or drank the syrup as a spring tonic and energy booster. The Cree Indians boiled the bark into a tea for treating coughs. Other Indians used the tea for expelling worms. Tea made from the roots was thought to help prevent premature childbirth. The chewed bark was applied to cuts to speed healing.
