Even though the family of beans is diverse, they are all varieties of the Kidney Bean. Beans are indigenous to the Americas and were unknown to the rest of the world until the time of Columbus. All varieties of beans were used as trade goods by native American tribes and each tribe had its own names and folklore for the different beans. Ancient Chinese herbalists used bean curd (tofu) in a soup to treat colds.
