General Bells Palsy Information
Bell’s palsy is a disorder which affects the facial nerves, causing the sufferer to lose control of the muscles in one side of the face. People with Bell’s palsy have problems with tearing and drooling and may experience sensitivity in the ears. The onset is very sudden, and often appears overnight. Bell’s palsy is not life threatening, but can cause embarrassment, stress and inconvenience. The disorder can affect people of all ages, but it most commonly strikes young adults and those in middle age. Pregnant women, diabetics and those suffering from flu, colds and upper respiratory infections are also at risk. Bell’s palsy usually resolves itself without treatment in six to 12 months.

Possible Causes of Bells Palsy
The cause of Bell’s palsy is unknown, but researchers believe the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which is responsible for cold sores and blisters, plays a role in the development of the disease.

Possible Symptoms of Bells Palsy
The most common symptom of Bell’s palsy is a rapid onset of weakness, numbness, paralysis or heaviness in one side of the face. Other symptoms include inability to close the eye on the affected side of the face, involuntary facial twitches; pain behind the ear, drooling and inarticulate speech.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Bells Palsy
Although there is no way to prevent Bell’s palsy, there are steps sufferers can take to treat the symptoms and improve the outcome. Protect the eye on the affected side of the face from drying out by covering it with a patch and lubricating it frequently with eye drops. Wear eye glasses and sunglasses to protect the eyes from foreign bodies and the harmful rays of the sun. Facial massage can help prevent permanent contractures of the muscles in the face, and acupuncture can help speed recovery. Get plenty of rest and take steps to reduce stress.
