Hacking the trunk of the tree with an axe will enable the liquid Benzoin to accumulate beneath the bark, or seep from the incision(s), which flows down and hardens into lumps. The resin, also called gum benzoin or benjamin, ranges in color from pale yellow to red brown. The Siam and Sumatra Benzoin’s are the types most widely used.
