Benzoin General Information
The Benzoin tree is native to the tropical areas of the Far East and produces a balsamic resin called Benzoin. Hacking the trunk of the tree with an axe will enable the liquid Benzoin to accumulate beneath the bark, or seep from the incision(s), which flows down and hardens into lumps. The resin, also called gum benzoin or benjamin, ranges in color from pale yellow to red brown. The Siam and Sumatra Benzoin’s are the types most widely used. The resin or gum is used for medicinal purposes as well as an aromatic in perfumes. Benzoin has antiseptic, expectorant, carminative, diuretic, stimulant, astringent, antioxidant, and preservative properties.

Benzoin Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Benzoin tincture, when diluted with water, works well on dry, cracked, and chapped skin. It also works well as an expectorant for respiratory congestion and severe bronchitis. Placing the tincture in a vaporizer is useful for treating croup and laryngitis. When Benzoin is taken internally, it acts as a carminative and is rapidly absorbed. It also helps relieve coughs and nervous tension. Benzoin essential oil clears the sinuses and breaks up congestion. Celandine is also added to cosmetics to prevent fats from turning rancid.
