Black Cherry General Information
Native Americans used the twigs, roots, and fruits of Black Cherry to treat diarrhea, lung congestion, coughs, and colds. Some tribes made a general tonic from the wild cherry branches. The Blackfeet Indians drank the juice to relieve diarrhea and soothe a sore throat. They also steeped the inner bark and used it in tea for a purge. The Medicine men of the Crow Indians used the bark to cleanse sores and burns. Other tribes used Black Cherry to treat coughs and colds, hemorrhoids, and diarrhea. European settlers learned of the Black Cherry bark’s medicinal qualities. In the late 18th century it was used successfully to treat jaundice.

Black Cherry Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Today Black Cherry is used to treat dry and irritable coughs; and, when combined with coltsfoot, it is an effective treatment for asthma and whooping cough. Many cough syrups and lozenges on the market today contain wild cherry bark. Black Cherry tea made from the inner bark is used to treat sore throats, sores, burns, wounds, and conjunctivitis. It is also used to soothe indigestion, gout, and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Black Cherry Safety & Interaction Information
Black Cherry bark is highly toxic in excessive doses because it contains a cyanide-like chemical called hydrocyanic acid. Symptoms of toxicity include difficulty in breathing, spasms, and twitching. Safety in young children, pregnant or nursing women, or those with severe liver or kidney disease is not known.
