The bursa allows smooth gliding between these structures where movement would otherwise cause friction. Most people have approximately 160 bursa sacs in their bodies. Deep bursae are internal (beneath the shoulder blade) and deep in the bones or muscles. Superficial bursae are located just beneath the skin. Since bursae are located near joints or tendons, inflammation in these soft tissues will often be perceived as joint or muscle pain and often mistaken for arthritis or tendonitis. Bursitis is usually temporary, but may become recurrent or chronic. Unlike arthritis, bursitis does not cause deformity, but it can restrain motion due to pain. Bursitis can affect anyone, but older people are more likely to suffer from the ailment. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Possible Causes of Bursitis The most common cause of bursitis is injury or strain due to poor conditioning; poor posture; continual or repeated motion; airborne allergies; reactions to certain foods; tight muscles; and using an awkward position to lift or reach. An infection within the bursa can be responsible for the inflammation. Bursitis may be associated with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, thyroid disease, infection and diabetes. Bursitis is difficult to diagnose as bursae are generally not visible on x-rays. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Possible Symptoms of Bursitis Symptoms of bursitis are similar to tendinitis and include pain and stiffness aggravated by movement; joint pain and swelling are also common. Pain may be worse at night and can affect sleep quality. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Possible Lifestyle Changes for Bursitis Warm up before activities with mild stretching.
