General Catarrh Information
Catarrh is discharge from the nose brought on by a viral or bacterial infection, allergies, chemical irritants or dry air. Catarrh leads to inflammation of the mucus membranes in the nasal cavity and/or sinuses and results in a stuffy nose. Coughing also occurs if the catarrh drips down the back of the throat. Catarrh is often a symptom of an underlying condition, rather than a disorder itself.

Possible Symptoms of Catarrh
The main symptom of catarrh is a thick, yellowish discharge that comes from the nose. This discharge can be either constant or intermittent and it can be thin and runny or thick and ropy. Sneezing often makes the symptoms worsen. Painful scabs and fissures inside the nose are often made worse by blowing the nose. Catarrh can also be a symptom of an underlying condition, such as a food allergy, cold, nasal polyps, allergies, influenza and sinusitis.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Catarrh
Always blow the nose carefully, one nostril at a time with the mouth open. Inhale hot steam to decongest the airways. Use a humidifier in bedrooms and offices whenever possible. Do not smoke and avoid smoke-filled rooms. A saline nose spray can be helpful, but do not sniff the water into the sinuses. This could lead to infection.
