The Native American Indians taught the early colonists how to use Coptis root for canker sores and mouth sores, poor digestion, and infections. The Mohawk Indians used Coptis root with the sap of white ash to treat deafness. Due to a high demand for its medicinal value, Coptis became scarce through over-harvesting and goldenseal was used as a replacement. Both Coptis and goldenseal contain berberine, which has been shown to help fight certain types of bacteria, fungi, reduce inflammation, and help promote healing. Today Coptis is abundant, and is used as a remedy for numerous conditions, but is also used as a substitute for Goldenseal. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Coptis root Uses & Scientific Evidence For Coptis root increases blood flow to the extremities and has been shown to have laxative properties.
