The Mayans and Aztecs used it as a sexual stimulant and as a treatment for respiratory disorders. Damiana was sometimes burned ceremoniously to enable participants to see visions. For thousands of years, Latin American cultures have ritualistically used Damiana as a sexual stimulant. Since the 19th century this herb has been used as an overall body tonic, and can be used for a variety of ailments for both men and women. Damiana acts as an anti-depressant. It reduces anxiety, nervousness, and mild depression, and promotes a general feeling of well being. It also stimulates the circulation of the body which raises energy levels, thereby promoting weight loss. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Damiana Leaves Uses & Scientific Evidence For Today Damiana is used to treat asthma and other respiratory diseases, depression, digestive problems, menstrual disorders, and various forms of sexual dysfunction such as impotence in men, and inability to achieve orgasm in women. While Damiana is still popular as an aphrodisiac for males, the effects appear to be rather mild, and no scientific studies have been reported. Even though Damiana contains arbutin, a urinary antiseptic, the levels are probably too low to make this herb a useful treatment for bladder infections. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Damiana Leaves Dosage Information The recommended dosage of Damiana is 2 to 4 g taken 2 to 3 times daily, or as directed on the label. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Damiana Leaves Safety & Interaction Information Damiana is on the FDAs generally recognized as safe (GRAS) list and appears to be safe when using recommended dosages; however, since Damiana contains low levels of cyanide-like compounds, exceeding recommended dosages may be dangerous.
