General Emotional Pain and Upset Information
Emotional pain and upset often occurs when people react to traumatic events or situations. Emotional pain can be the result following common occurrences, such as a car accident, breakup of a relationship or loss of a job, or it can occur after catastrophic events, such as war, terrorism, physical attack or the death of a loved one.     Possible Causes of Emotional Pain and Upset
    Everyone reacts to traumatic events differently, so there is no way to predict what may send someone into emotional distress; however, there are five factors known to worsen the affect of a traumatic event on individuals:

  • the severity of the event
  • personal history of the individual
  • how drastically the event will affect the personÂ’s life
  • reactions of family and friends to the event
  • the personÂ’s personality, coping skills and outlook

    Recognizing the signs of emotional pain and getting help as soon as possible is the key to combating emotional problems. Signs of emotional upset include changes in eating and sleeping habits; decreased energy; changes in sexual appetite; chronic pain; depression; panic attacks; crying; anger; emotional numbness; memory lapses and concentration problems.

    Emotional pain is like any other type of pain. If left unchecked, it can turn into more serious problems, like depression, anxiety, paranoia, personality disorders or other mental and physical illnesses.
