General Environmental Toxicity Information
Environmental toxicity refers to the body’s negative reaction to any infectious agent (viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms), allergen (substances that cause allergic reactions) or other pathogen (substances that cause disease). These substances that can affect water quality, food supply and the body’s level of exposure to toxic chemicals. When the body is invaded by a foreign substance, it responds by producing antibodies and white blood cells to rid the body of the invader. Unfortunately, these toxic agents dwell in air, water and food of all Americans, so it is important to keep the immune system in optimum working order and protect the kidneys and liver, which rid the body of such toxins.

Possible Causes of Environmental Toxicity
Different minerals vary in the negative effects they have on the body. Some, like zinc and calcium, enhance and work to sustain life. Others, like copper, are needed in small amounts but can cause serious problems when ingested in large amounts. Still others, like lead, aluminum, mercury and cadmium, are present in the environment but can impair organ function when introduced into the body. There are many ways these minerals can enter the body. Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers can seep into soil and food, eventually entering the body. Many food additives and preservatives are intentionally introduced into food items that are sold in all grocery stores. Ripening agents are sprayed on fruits and vegetables to help enhance production. Toxic chemicals and hazardous waste contaminate air and water. Indoor pollution, such as asbestos, carbon monoxide, disinfectants, mold, paint and tobacco smoke, invade the lungs and pores. All of these toxins can enter the body and create problems.

Possible Symptoms of Environmental Toxicity
Symptoms of environmental toxicity vary widely. Some people may suffer from watery eyes, diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach and tinnitus. Other signs include respiratory problems (asthma, bronchitis, stuffy nose, aggravated allergies), headache, depression, eczema, fatigue and arthritis. More serious signs of environmental toxicity are immune deficiency and cancer. Symptoms of indoor environmental pollution in children include poor academic performance and some emotional, behavioral and academic disabilities.

Possible Lifestyle Changes for Environmental Toxicity
Eat a diet high in fiber, oat bran and wheat bran. Drink only steam-distilled water. Use an air cleaner to remove bacteria, odors, dust, pollen, smog and smoke from the air. Reduce exposure to natural gas, pesticides, radon, smoke and other chemicals in the household. Ventilate the home well. Make sure all wood surfaces in the home are sealed with a nontoxic sealant and test older paint for lead. Buy a carbon monoxide detector for the home and make sure to change its batteries regularly. Change vacuum cleaner bags regularly or use the bag-less variety. Do not smoke and do not let anyone else smoke in your presence. Do not use insect sprays or bug bombs.
