Glutamine General Information
Glutamine helps maintain the proper acid/alkaline balance in the body. It is also the basis of the building blocks for the synthesis of RNA and DNA. Glutamine is known as brain fuel. Glutamine is converted into glutamic acid, and glutamic acid converts into Glutamine, which are both necessary for cerebral function. This amino acid also increases the amount of GABA which is important to brain function and mental activity. Glutamine is found in numerous plants and animals; however, it is easily destroyed through cooking. Raw spinach and parsley are excellent sources of Glutamine.

Glutamine Uses & Scientific Evidence For
Glutamine helps build and maintain muscle; therefore, bodybuilders and dieters find this supplement useful, but more importantly, it prevents muscle-wasting that happens with prolonged bed rest or diseases such as cancer and AIDS. Glutamine supplementation can help treat arthritis, autoimmune disease, fibrosis, intestinal disorders, peptic ulcers, connective tissue disease, and tissue damage caused by radiation treatments. Due to its ability to enhance mental function, Glutamine is also beneficial in treating epilepsy, fatigue, impotence, depression, schizophrenia, and senility. It also decreases sugar cravings and the desire for alcohol.

If you are using Glutamine as part of a treatment program, it is recommended you consult with your physician for the appropriate dosage. Amino acid supplements prefaced by the letter L, such as L-glutamine, are more similar to the amino acids in the body than those that start with the letter D, with the exception of D-L phenylalanine, which treats chronic pain.
