General Gonorrhea Information
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that is the result of a bacterial infection of the urethra in men or the urethra and/or cervix in women. Also known as the clap, gonorrhea can also infect the rectum, pelvic organs, throat and conjunctiva. Gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted disease in America, with 600,000 cases reported annually and another 1 million unreported cases. More than 75% of these cases affected people ages 15 to 29. Gonorrhea causes no long-term problems if it is treated early, but left untreated, it can cause very serious complications, which include pelvic inflammatory disease, abscesses in the ovaries, chronic pelvic pain and infertility in women.

Possible Causes of Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is most often transmitted through sexual intercourse, including oral and anal sex. Gonorrhea can be passed on from an infected mother to her newborn baby during birth. Many times, a person may be a silent carrier - i.e., they exhibit no symptoms of the disease but may infect others. A person with gonorrhea remains contagious until treated. The risk for contracting gonorrhea increase for those who have multiple sexual partners, a partner who has multiple partners, those who engage in unprotected sex or anyone who starts sexual activity before age 18.

Possible Symptoms of Gonorrhea
Half of all of those infected with gonorrhea have no symptoms. Women who experience symptoms have frequent and painful urination, cloudy vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, inflammation of the pelvic area and abnormal uterine bleeding. Symptoms for the male include urethral discharge, painful urination and anal itching. The throat, anus and rectum are common areas of infection in both men and women. In men, the symptoms are distressing enough that they tend to seek medical assistance, but symptoms can so mild in women, they often dismiss them as a bladder or vaginal infection. he should assume he has gonorrhea until proven otherwise. If left untreated, it can cause serious complications in the body.
