Grand Fir General Information
For hundreds of years, the Native Americans used Grand Fir bark mixed with stinging nettles for bathing and as a general tonic. The Lushoot Indians boiled Fir needles to make a tea as a remedy for colds. Other tribes used the boughs as an indoor air freshener, and burned them as an incense to make a purifying smoke for warding off illnesses. They also crushed and mixed the bark of Grand Fir, Red Alder, and Western Hemlock and made an infusion for internal injuries. The Hesquiat Indians believed the pitch of young trees mixed with oil and rubbed on the scalp could prevent balding, but it also served as a deodorant for the head.
