Kukui General Information
Kukui is the official tree emblem for Hawaii. It has small whitish flowers and majestic foliage which blankets many mountainous slopes in Hawaii. Not only is Kukui beautiful, it also provided some of life’s barest necessities to early Hawaiians. The Kukui kernels were used in making Hawaiian lamps, which was their primary source of light. They made a dye from the seeds to use in tattooing and the nuts were used in making leis. They ate raw Kukui for treating constipation. Kukui has antiseptic, anti-mycotic, aperient, aphrodisiac, emollient, laxative, purgative, stimulant, and sudorific properties.
