~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Back to Top ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ | Soothing Herbs for Stressful Times Many Americans well as others around the world are suffering from feelings of depression and anxiety following terrorist events. According to the poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, Seven out of ten people said they have felt depressed since the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, nearly half report having trouble concentrating and a third said they have had trouble sleeping.
We all know that stress and anxiety disorders are unhealthy for the body and shorten our life spans. Stress overworks the adrenal glands and leads to fatigue and even exhaustion. While counseling is recommended for people who are not able to continue their lives as usual after a month to six weeks following traumatic events, Nature and nutrition also offer many safe treatments for these conditions. This newsletter deals with herbs and supplements to make life less stressful. An article on Ginkgo is also included, as it is a great remedy to increase mental alertness, and helps with concentration.
A healthy body is your best defense in trying times. I recommend anti-oxidants to prevent damage that can be brought on by stress conditions. A well- rounded supplement like Natures Way ALIVE is helpful to provide all the nutrients that will keep you feeling at your best.
Need a little extra help? There are different types of supplements that ease the nervous system. The first group of herbs, tonics or adaptogenic herbs, nourish and strengthen the body; helping us to handle stress better over time and repairing damage. Many of these herbs have also been shown to increase endurance in physical activities and enhance in your sex life as well.
While the most famous adaptogen is Ginseng, research by top Russian doctors and scientists has shown that Arctic Root, (Rhodiola) can ease many conditions, including fatigue, stress, depression, heart disease and cancer.
In a placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover trial, low-dose treatment with a standardized extract of Rhodiola rosea reduced symptoms of fatigue in 56 young, healthy male and female physicians on night duty. Results were measured via a fatigue index that took into account various aspects of total mental performance, including associative thinking, short-term memory, calculation and ability of concentration, and speed of audio-visual perception.

Rhodiola Rosea has reportedly benefited persons with the following conditions:
1. Stress 2. Depression 3. Parkinsons 4. Alzheimers 5. Poor memory and mental function 6. Liver toxicity 7. Low energy 8. Low immunity 9. Cancer 10. Elevated cortisol and low dopamine levels.
Recommended Dosage is 50 mg twice daily.

Other Adaptogenic Herbs: Jiaogulan, Ginseng
Herbs such as Kava, Passionflower, and Valerian have a more direct action. These usually promote relaxation with a single dose. Kava Kava is quickly absorbed and often eases feelings of anxiety and increases tranquility within minutes of ingesting. Kava has been used historically in Fiji, and may have been cultivated as far back as 3000 years ago. It is the strongest natural remedy for relaxation next to Opium, but Kava Kava is totally legal and non-addictive. It can be used as an herbal alternative to Valium without the harmful side effects. As with all relaxing herbs, you should not drive after taking Kava Kava until you know how it will affect you. Order Kava Kava Products for Relaxation
Passionflower and Valerian are most often used for insomnia. Passionflower is less likely to have morning after effects than Valerian. It is also more pleasant to the taste, not to mention smell! Valerian tends to smell like old socks while Passionflower has a mellow flavor suitable for use in teas. Order Passionflower tincture now for restful sleep.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Back to Top ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ | Ginkgo Biloba compares favorably to drug used in Alzheimers treatment EGb-761, a standardized extract of Ginkgo Biloba, is approved by German authorities as an effective treatment for primary degenerative dementia and vascular dementia. Tacrine® (tetrahydroaminoacrine) is the only drug approved in the U.S. for the treatment of Alzheimers disease. An open, uncontrolled trial was conducted to compare the pharmacological activity of ginkgo and Tacrine in elderly patients with mild-to-moderate dementia. Results showed that both substances exhibit cognitive activator type effects, characterized by CEEG profiles demonstrating an increase of 7.5 to 13 cps activity and decreased slow frequencies. Ginkgo Biloba (240 mg) exhibited cognitive activator profiles in more subjects than Tacrine (40 mg), and subjects who showed more cognitive-activator responses to the first dose of ginkgo also demonstrated better therapeutic effects with chronic administration of ginkgo. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Back to Top ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ | Tired of Chronic Pain? Try SAM-e! Author :Karen Shelton In 1999 I had a recurrence of extreme back pain from a lifelong condition. After a few months of just hoping it would go away, I resorted to visiting a pain clinic where I was diagnosed with sciatica and minor arthritis in my hips. The doctors solution to my pain was narcotic pain relievers and nerve block shots every two weeks. These shots often left me unable to walk for up to 24 hours, and the narcotics seemed to be taking away what was left of my energy.
SAM-e, or S-Adenosylmethionine; is relatively new in the US but has been tested extensively in Europe and found to be helpful in cases of: - chronic pain
- depression
- arthritis
- fibromyalgia
- chronic fatigue
SAM-e has so far been found completely safe for humans and and beneficial to the liver and stomach as well. SAM-e has been said to be as effective for joint pain as Glucosamine, however the benefits of SAM-e are apparent after only days of regular use, as opposed to several weeks for Glucosamine.
I began to hear about SAM-e as a miracle solution to pain. I hesitated to try it because it seemed expensive. But as my sciatic pain raged on for months with no sign of improvement I knew I had to do something, or else put my life plans on hold indefinitely. I have been taking 400 mg a day of SAM-e since October 1999 and have found that SAM-e has helped improved my pain and my mood and eliminated the need for prescription pain relievers.
In order to work at its best, SAM-e must be taken on an empty stomach. I take mine first thing in the morning, along with a B complex vitamin, then wait at least an hour to eat. The minimum dose recommended for pain is 400 mg per day. The minimum dose for depression is 800 mg per day. One major benefit of SAM-e is that you will feel results within a few days, while most anti-depressant medications take weeks to show results.
Contraindications: Although SAM-e is also helpful in cases of depression, it is not to be used by those suffering from bipolar disorder. Some people may experience uneasiness with SAM-e. If this occurs, reduce dosage or discontinue use. Read more and Order SAM-e
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Back to Top ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ | Herb of the Month: St. Johns Wort By Deb Jackson St. Johns Wort - Hypericum perforatum - Other Names: Dotted St. Johnswort, Hypericum, Klamath Weed, Touch-and-heal, Goat weed, Rosin Rose.
Habitat: (Hypericum punctatum) Perennial herb native to North America and Canada from Nova Scotia, Ontario Quebec south to the United States, eastern states. Found growing in open sunny or partial shady areas, along roadsides in dry, gravelly soils. Cultivation: St. Johnswort is easy to grow from seed or root division in spring or autumn, in any well-drained but moisture retentive soil. Succeeds in dry soils, prefers sun or semi-shade. A woody, branched root system produces many round, erect, stems branching at the leaf axis, which are covered with dark red dots, stems are solid dark red at base. Growing to a height of 1 to 3 feet, The leaves are opposite, sessile and unserrated, oblong to linear, light green and smooth, covered with small transparent oil glands that look like holes, more visible when held to bright light. The cymes of yellow flowers, grow atop each stem. The five petals are dotted with black along the margins, the center or ovary is surround by many stamens, causing it to appear furry, flowers bloom from June to September. The fruit is a three celled capsule containing small, dark brown seeds. Gather top 6 to 8 inches of plants when flowers are in bloom, dry for later use.
Properties: There are 400 species of St. Johnswort found throughout the world, it has been used as a medicinal for thousands of years, but has only recently been studied for its medicinal value. Now proven to have many highly active compounds including rutin, pectin, choline, sitosterol, hypericin and pseudohypericin. The flowers and leaves are medicinal as analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aromatic, astringent, cholagogue, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, nervine, resolvent, sedative, stimulant, vermifuge and vulnerary. Some compounds of the plant have been shown to have potent anti-retroviral activity without serious side effects and they are being researched in the treatment of AIDS. Hypericum perforatum is a mild antidepressant of the class MAO inhibitor. The mechanism by which St. Johns Wort acts as an antidepressant is not fully understood. Early research indicated that this it mildly inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO). MAO is responsible for the breakdown of two brain chemicals - serotonin and nor epinephrine. By inhibiting MAO and increasing nor epinephrine, it may exert a mild anti-depressive action. The antidepressant or mood elevating effects of Hypericum perforatum were originally thought to be due solely to hypericin, but hypericin does not act alone, it relies on the complex interplay of many constituents such as xanthones and flavinoids for its antidepressant actions. Hypericum perforatum may also block the receptors that bind serotonin and so maintain normal mood and emotional stability. Hypericum punctatum is used in treating a wide range of disorders, including pulmonary complaints, bladder problems, diarrhea and nervous depression. It is also very effectual in treating bed wetting in children. It has a sedative and pain reducing effect, it is especially regarded as an herb to use where there are menopausal changes triggering irritability and anxiety. In addition to neuralgic pain, it will ease fibrocystitis, sciatica and rheumatic pain. The oil extract of the plant can be taken for stomachache, colic, intestinal problems, and as an expectorant for the congestion in the lungs. Externally, a medicinal infusion of the flowers in olive oil is applied to wounds, sores, burns, ulcers, swellings, cramps, rheumatism, tumors, caked breasts, and other skin problems. It is also valued in the treatment of sunburn and as a cosmetic preparation to the skin. Persons with fair skin should avoid exposure to strong sunlight and other sources of ultraviolet light, such as tanning beds, while taking St. Johns Wort. These individuals may suffer dermatitis, severe burning, and possibly blistering of the skin. The severity of these effects will depend on the amount of the plant consumed and the length of exposure to sunlight.
Folklore: There are many ancient superstitions regarding this plant, its name Hypericum is derived from the Greek and means over an apparition, a reference to the belief that it smelled so obnoxious to evil spirits that a whiff of it would cause them to fly. The plant was given to have magical powers. In ancient Greece, the herb was used to treat many ailments, including sciatica and poisonous reptile bites. Order St. Johns Wort Supplements

Tribute to the World Trade Center This is Dr. Seuss at his finest. He, of course, didnt write this. Author Unknown:
Every U down in Uville liked U.S. a lot, But the Binch, who lived Far East of Uville, did not. The Binch hated U.S! the whole U.S. way! Now dont ask me why, for nobody can say,
It could be his turban was screwed on too tight. Or the sun from the desert had beaten too bright But I think that the most likely reason of all May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.
But, whatever the reason, his heart or his turban, He stood facing Uville, the part that was urban.
Theyre doing their business, he snarled from his perch. Theyre raising their families! Theyre going to church! Theyre leading the world, and their empire is thriving, I MUST keep the Ss and Us from surviving!
Tomorrow, he knew, all the Us and the Ss, Would put on their pants and their shirts and their dresses, Theyd go to their offices, playgrounds and schools, And abide by their U and S values and rules,
And then theyd do something he liked least of all, Every U down in U-ville, the tall and the small, Would stand all united, each U and each S, And theyd sing Uvilles anthem, God bless us! God bless!
All around their Twin Towers of Uville, theyd stand, and their voices would drown every sound in the land.
I must stop that singing, Binch said with a smirk, And he had an idea--an idea that might work! The Binch stole some U airplanes in U morning hours, And crashed them right into the Uville Twin Towers.
Theyll wake to disaster! he snickered, so sour, And how can they sing when they cant find a tower? The Binch cocked his ear as they woke from their sleeping, All set to enjoy their U-wailing and weeping,
Instead he heard something that started quite low, And it built up quite slow, but it started to grow-- And the Binch heard the most unpredictable thing... And he couldnt believe it--they started to sing!
He stared down at U-ville, not trusting his eyes, What he saw was a shocking, disgusting surprise! Every U down in U-ville, the tall and the small, Was singing! Without any towers at all!
He HADNT stopped U-Ville from singing! It sung! For down deep in the hearts of the old and the young, Those Twin Towers were standing, called Hope and called Pride, And you cant smash the towers we hold deep inside.
So we circle the sites where our heroes did fall, With a hand in each hand of the tall and the small, And we mourn for our losses while knowing well cope, For we still have inside that U-Pride and U-Hope.
For America means a bit more than tall towers, It means more than wealth or political powers, Its more than our enemies ever could guess, So may God bless America! Bless us! God bless!
