They have a variety of forms that merge into three basic patterns, one terrestrial, and the other two epiphytic. Terrestrial orchids form leaves and flower stalks from underground corms or rhizomes, enabling the plant to survive winter climates. Ancient Grecians Theophrastus and Dioscorides, were the first to describe Orchids. In ancient times, the shape and structure of a plant was, many times, what determined its medicinal value. The dried roots were used to treat depression, and as a stimulant and aphrodisiac. The Turks discovered that the tubers in the center of the flower can be used to make a substance called salep, which they used as an effective treatment for reducing fever and as an aphrodisiac. The salep in Wild Orchid has astringent, anti-cancer, demulcent, expectorant, and nutritive properties. It is said that one ounce of salep can sustain a person for a whole day. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Orchid Uses & Scientific Evidence For The salep in the tuber of the Orchid flower is high in nutrients and has demulcent properties.
