Pulsatilla General Information
Pulsatilla, also known as Easter Flower, was so named because it blooms at Easter time. After the flower has bloomed, long hairy threads which are attached to the fruit of the plant, turn silky and feathery. When the feathery tails blow in the wind, it gives the illusion of smoke crossing the prairie, therefore, in the Midwest and West it is called Prairie Smoke. Native American Indians put the sepals, the green part of the flower that protects the flower in the bud, in their nostrils to stop nose bleeds. The crushed the leaves were used in poultices for relieving the pain of rheumatism.
