It contains many of the same anti-malarial phytochemicals as quinine and is used in the same manner as quinine bark in treating digestive problems, malaria, fevers, and dysentery. It has also been used as an insecticide and, due to its properties, works well as a tonic. Quassia has anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, anti-leukemic, anti-cancer, anti-tumor, anti-viral, astringent, laxative, sedative, blood cleansing, insecticidal, anti-ulcer, and digestive and bile stimulant properties. - - - - - - - - - - - - Back to Top - - - - - - - - - - - - Quassia Uses & Scientific Evidence For Quassia works well as a tonic, blood cleanser, digestive aid, and laxative. It can stimulate the appetite and help reduce the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. The bark is used to treat malaria, snakebite, fevers, parasites, dysentery, dyspepsia, intestinal gas, stomachache, anemia, and liver and gastrointestinal disorders. In Mexico the bark is used for liver and gallbladder diseases. Quassia leaves are used in a bath for treating measles, or as a mouthwash after tooth extractions. When taking an infusion, the standard dose is 1 cup 2-3 times daily. The standard dose in tablet or capsule form is 1-2g 2-3 times daily. Taking Quassia for prolonged periods of time may lead to weak vision and blindness. Quassia is not to be used by pregnant women.
