By the 19th century, Red Clover was used as a blood purifier. For centuries it was believed that many illnesses including cancer, eczema, and eruptions of the venereal disease, were caused by toxins in the blood. It is also used to treat menopausal symptoms. This herb works well in treating bronchitis, asthma, and spasmodic coughs. Red Clover is also used to treat acne, eczema, abscesses, psoriasis, insect bites, stings, and other skin diseases. In a compress it works well in treating arthritis pains and gout. For a tea, take 1 cup of boiling water to 2-3 teaspoons of dried flowers. Drink 3 cups a day. In capsule of tablet form take 2-4 grams a day. In using a tincture use 2-4 ml 3 times a day. Concentrated extracts of Red Clover from the raw herb; however, may possess danger not present in beverage teas. Detailed safety studies have not been performed at the time of this writing. If you are taking hormones such as oral contraceptives, blood-thinning drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin), heparin, Trental, or even aspirin, you should consult first with your physician before using Red Clover. Due to its estrogen-like and blood-thinning constituents, this herb should not be used by pregnant or nursing women, or women who have had breast or uterine cancer.
