Safflower General Information
Safflower is native to the Mediterranean countries and cultivated in Europe and the U.S. In India, they cultivate Safflower mainly for the oil from the seeds and a reddish dye from the flower; however, the flowers have been used in Ayurvedic medicines, and European and Japanese pharmacopoeias. Traditionally, this herb was used in China to treat coronary disease, thrombotic disorders, and menstrual problems. Safflower has purgative, diaphoretic, and diuretic properties.

Safflower Uses & Scientific Evidence For
As a topical, Safflower is used for skin ulcers and wounds. Drinking hot Safflower tea will produce strong perspiration and is used for colds and congestion. The flowers are used to cleanse and heal wounds and sores, and is used to treat measles. Conjugated linoleic acid is derived from Safflower and plays an important role in weight management because it reduces body fat while retaining muscle mass. Safflower also helps eliminate lactic acid buildup and post-exercise soreness. Preliminary Chinese research suggest the flowers of this plant can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and lower cholesterol levels. Animal studies have shown that Safflower stimulates immune function, but more research is needed before a determination can be made as to its effectiveness in humans.
