Sunburns may cause the skin to get red, and may boil or flake, and have a painfull burning sensation. Proper sun protection is required to keep skin safe from overexposure and skin damage. Sun Safety Tips - Apply sun screen carefully and generously. Re-apply after swimming
- Re-applying sun screen after swimming does not extend the protection time of your skin, however, it is necessary to apply sun screen after swimming.
- The sun light is strongest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so avoid these times.
- Apply sun protection even when you are in the shade. 40% UV radiation will still be getting through.
- Do not stay in the sun too long on the first sunny days. Accustom your skin to the skin gradually.
- In the beginning of summer, use high sun protection factors designed for your skin type.
- Snow and water intensify sun radiation, apply adequate higher protection.
- Your holiday destination is near the equator? Note that you do need higher sun protection because of more intense UV radiation. Your natural protection will be lower. This applies as well for mountaineering: the higher you climb and hike, the stronger sun protection you need.
- Eyes have to be protected with sun glasses with UV filter. Especially when reading - white paper reflects 80% of the suns radiation.
- Pay particular attention to children. Sun protection should include sun block, hat and T-shirt. Never expose babies below 6 months of age to direct sun light.
Skin Types Experts have devised a classification system for skin phototypes (SPTs) based on the sensitivity to sunlight. It ranges from SPT I (lightest skin plus other factors) to IV (darkest skin). [See Table] People with skin types I and II are at highest risk for photoaging skin diseases, including cancer. It should be noted, however, that premature aging from sunlight can affect people of all skin shades. | Skin Type | Burning History, Tanning History | | I | Always burns, never tans, sensitive to sun exposure | | II | Burns easily, tans minimally | | III | Burns moderately, tans gradually to light brown | | IV | Burns minimally, always tans well to moderately brown | | V | Rarely burns, tans profusely to dark | | VI | Never burns, deeply pigmented, least sensitive |
